Alex Bouwhuis was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After earning undergraduate degrees in biochemistry and Spanish, he attended the University of Michigan Medical School and subsequently completed his residency at the University of Michigan as well.
Since completing his training, he has been in private practice providing care at a small community hospital in Michigan close to his hometown. A typical work week for Dr. Bouwhuis spans several anesthetic subspecialties including pediatrics, obstetrics, orthopedics, neurosurgery, general surgery, and offsite anesthesia.
Since becoming a partner at his firm, he has focused his non-clinical responsibilities on quality control and representing his hospital within the ASPIRE program (a quality improvement arm of the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group that focuses on improving outcomes by attempting to reduce unexplained variation in practice through shared quality measures and collaboration with participating hospitals throughout the country).
When Dr. Bouwhuis is not busy at the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters. They frequently spend time on the beautiful Lake Michigan, traveling to visit extended family, and spending time outdoors.
